Specific Need

The Flint Hills Breadbasket provides food support to anyone experiencing food insecurity in Riley County and a section of Pottawatomie County. We have undertaken a capital campaign to support our move to a new locationt that will serve our community with greater dignity and care. Now we need to fill the shleves! We have experienced a steady increase in the number of visitors to the Breadbasket and our partner programs, and we know that there will be another increase in guests as the new location offers more accessible and timely service. Procuring enough healthy food to meet the level of need has always been a challenge and it is expected that we will need your support to meet that need. Providing for these most basic needs provides stability for many households, allowing them to pay other basic bills and to take one worry off of their plate. The Breadbasket needs support to provide sustainable access to fresh foods, basic staples for cooking like flour, sugar, vegetable oil, and spices, and high need hygiene items.

Our mission is to provide reliable access to healthy food, build connections with community partners, and empower neighbors to meet their basic needs. When we reach our goal, there will be no one in need among us.

Profile

Grow Green funds provide a key portion of our operating dollars. Youf support is a reliable source of funds for food procurement, staff salaries, and everyday expenses. The Breadbasket purchases eggs, milk, butter, cooking oil, and other food choices that fit our Nutrition Policy as being healthy food choices. These items cannot be sources through direct donation, making volume purchasing a high return use of your donation.

The Breadbasket operates with a staff of five full time and one part time positions, all focused on providing a positive experience for guests, volunteers, partner programs, and the community as a whole. We deliver food to 8 partner locations (6 in Manhattan, 1 in Ogden, 1 in Riley) and we serve an average of 400 households at The Market (our own location) each week. Volunteers are critical members of our team, but their work cannot be done without the support of our dedicated staff.

Just like any other entity, the Breadbasket has "regular" bills, including fuel, insurance, water, electricity, phones, internet, and more. These expenses are typically not covered in grant funding, making it even more important for nonprofits to find other ways to support their everyday expenses. While this mind not seem exciting, the reality is that operating funds are the fuel that keeps us going. We don't take them for granted and recognize the trust that you place in us by supporting our mission.
