Roger Trenary Tennis & Education Fund

Mission

The Roger Trenary Tennis and Education Fund supports the development of tennis skills in young people in our community.

This fund was created more than two decades ago, early in the life of what was then the Manhattan Community Foundation, by a group of avid tennis players who wanted to encourage young people to develop tennis skills and interest in tennis as a lifetime sport. When Roger Trenary died a few years later from ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease), we renamed the fund in his memory. Roger was an excellent tennis player and university educator (an outstanding lecturer in economics).

The fund provides support for youth tennis in several ways, including need-based scholarships for tennis lessons for elementary-school students, coordinated by UFM Community Learning Center. We have also provided summer and after-school tennis workshops, provided grants for equipment to develop a tennis program at one of the Manhattan elementary schools, and sponsored USTA "Net Generation" training for elementary and middle-school PE instructors and others.
